More on metaphor and literalism.

From Nirvana and Ineffability by Asanga Tilakaratne

"...we know that nirvana is the experience resulting from the transformation of one's personality. The person who has realized the truth perceives reality differently. In a manner of speaking, we may say that he has destroyed (his old) world and created a new. Such figurative statements as the following have to be understood  in this light:
In this very fathom-long body, with its perception and mental faculty, I proclaim the world to be, likewise the origin of the world and the destruction of the world and the path leading to the destruction of the world (AN 4.45)
May all beings be happy and free from suffering.
